St George Hospital
St George Hospital is the largest hospital in the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District. I was a medical student at St George, and undertook my junior medical years and my specialty training there. I am very fond of the hospital and consider the staff in the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health to be my second family.
St George Hospital has a nursery that can cater for babies born after 32 weeks of gestation. If you are having your baby before this time, you will need to be transferred to a larger hospital such as the Royal Hospital for Women in Randwick. The major advantage of the public hospital is that there are paediatric, medical, ICU, surgical (and obstetric/gynaecological) registrars on site 24 hours a day. For this reason, I usually recommend the public hospital for women who have serious medical problems in their pregnancy. I would also recommend it for those women without private health insurance who still wish to be self funded private patients.

St George Private Hospital
St George Private Hospital is located adjacent to the public hospital in Kogarah.
St George Private Hospital has a nursery that can cater for babies born after 34 weeks gestation.
One of the major advantages over the public hospital is that you are guaranteed a spacious single room for your postnatal stay. This also means that a support person can stay with you if you like. Having first hand experience while giving birth to my own children in this hospital, I can personally vouch for the kindness and compassion of the midwives and the excellent care provided both in labour and on the postnatal ward.
